Title: Navigating the New Frontier of Hardware and Software Security
Ramesh Karri, Professor, New York University
Abstract
This talk examines the intersection of AI, design automation, and security through four connected challenges: insecure AI-assisted programming, the limits of general-purpose LLMs in hardware design, and supply-chain threats to hardware integrity.
I will first analyze GitHub Copilot and find that roughly 40% of its code suggestions contain security vulnerabilities, with outcomes strongly shaped by surrounding context.
Then, I will present VeriGen, domain-specialized Verilog LLMs fine-tuned on a curated corpus from GitHub and digitized textbooks, achieving major gains in syntactic correctness and competitive functional correctness versus much larger models?at significantly higher speed.
